Fugitive Dialogue #1

Fugitive Dialogue # 1 was a private discussion with contributors Valerie Connor, Fiona Fullam, Joan Laws and Gavin Murphy. October 16 in Ard Bia Nimmos Galway.

Recent events suggest that the ‘social silence’ which allowed economic folly to unfold more or less in full view, has infiltrated the Irish cultural discourse so thoroughly that it is extremely difficult, and even unfashionable, to be critical in Ireland at this time.

The first Fugitive Dialogue will be a private, round-table discussion with invited participants Valerie Connor, Gavin Murphy, Joanne Laws, Fiona Fullam, and we would like to consider the following questions:

What kind of writing on art for Ireland today?  What forms of publishing and distribution to challenge a perceived critical silence in Ireland? Are there new and open ways in which texts on art can be commissioned? Can we imagine the emergence of new critical publics in Ireland at this time and if so, how can they be produced

What kind of writing on art can we imagine for Ireland today? How can writing on art be freed to be more critical, more provocative?  What forms of publishing and distribution could challenge a perceived critical silence in Ireland? Are there new and open ways in which texts on art can be commissioned? Can we imagine the emergence of new critical publics in Ireland at this time and if so, how can they be produced?

We are inviting you to work with us to consider these (and perhaps other) questions, which will determine the shape of the first issue of Fugitive Papers and will be published on the Fugitive Papers website.
